Knowing Your Gear

It always a good idea to practice using your gear and refining your systems at home before you venture outside. This can mean the difference between frustration and enjoyment.

Here are a few tips to help you get started:
1. Practice setting up your tent in the comfort of your own home. Do it as many times as you need to get comfortable and familiarized with how your tent sets up and breaks down.

2. Packing and unpacking your backpack will help you streamline your efficiency and help you become familiarized with what works and what doesn't. There's no right or wrong, just what is comfortable and uncomfortable for you.

3. Keeping a map on hand and knowing how to read it isn't just for efficiency, but also for safety. Navigation skills can help keep you out of danger and keep you on track.

4. Hike in more populated areas as you train and build up to enjoy more remote locations. Jumping into a wilderness area outside of cell service for your first hike might end with a Search and Rescue mission or worse.

5. Practice changing out clothing and pitching your tent in the rain while in your backyard. If you're having a hard time you can always just go back inside and warm up and try again  later. If you're outside and a freak storm hits and your struggling you'll end up dealing with more than just aggravation. Hypothermia and  altered mental status can deeply affect you and your survival.

6. Take professional courses in Wilderness Medicine, Leave No Trace, and Back Country Travel. They will help get you on the fast track to outdoor travel and help you streamline your call for the wild.
